The Wine Guy’s TOP TEN Values of the Year By Bobby Lee Lawrence Photography by Marty Snortum Studio
After a year of tasting some of the best and worst wines, here are my choices for the best values. I limit my choices to those wines that are not only great values, but are also available in this area. Here they are, in no particular order: 2001Luna Rossa Winery, Nini. From Deming, NM, an Italian blend of Dolcetto, Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. $20.00
2003 Green Point Shiraz. From Victoria, Australia. One of the finest Shiraz’s from the Victoria region. Great now but will get better over time. $20.00
2004 Gruet Methode Champenoise, Blanc de Blanc. Tastes like a great French Champagne. Very elegant. My favorite of the sparkling wines. $22.00
2003 DH Lescombe Cabernet Sauvignon. A Bronze medal winner in California. A New Mexico wine that has gained worldwide acclaim. All the flavors of a great cabernet. $19.00 2002 Clines Red Truck. A blend of Syrah and Mourvedre, it has a great color and is one fine everyday red wine. Its unusual label is reminiscent of lazy days on a farm. $10.00
2004 BR Cohn Sonoma Silver label Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep ruby red color and a wine that is underrated. Drinks like a $200.00 bottle of cabernet. $17.95
2004 Alexander Valley Vineyards NV Chardonnay. This California wine has all the typical nuances of chardonnay from Alexander Valley. Crisp apple and citrus flavors, clean and crisp. $12.99
2002 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet/Shiraz. Blackberry and currant flavors with a long finish. If you like a smooth red, this is the one to try. $17.95
2005 Argyle Williamette Valley Riesling. This wine has always received at least a 90 rating from Wine Spectator. I refer to this wine as a fruit salad. It is complex and crisp. $21.25
2004 Fairview Goats Do Roam In Villages. This wine contains a varietal called Pinotage. If you are not familiar with this wonderful grape, you need to try this wine. Peppery with spicy black fruit. $11.99
