Since first raising curtains in 1997, the Spencer Theater for the Performing Arts towers like a gentle giant in the pristine town of Alto, NM, (just a few miles north of Ruidoso). Made of steel, limestone and glass, the Spencer Theater is a non-profit organization that brings an amazing array of world-class performances in drama, music, comedy and dance. Funded solely by the late Dr. A.N. and Jackie Spencer, the Spencer Theater is unlike any other venue in the region. This dramatic, multi-million dollar structure has 514-seats with magnificent views of the stage for every spectator. The rectangular playhouse is reminiscent of opera houses in Europe. The layout is comfortable and welcoming, making the experience very intimate.
The theater operates year-round, booking and presenting 30 to 45 professional performances during both a summer and a winter season. Where else in Southern New Mexico can you catch the full razzle-dazzle of Broadway productions like “Caberet,” “Camelot” or “Cats?” The list goes on and on with elaborate shows like Moscow Ballet’s “Cinderella” and Michael Flatley’s “Lord of the Dance.” There is also an outdoor stage facing the grass lawn that seats 1,200 or more for summertime performances. Even when the stage is “dark,” theater lights may be ablaze for rentals! The award-winning hall, which features a full commercial kitchen and a liquor license, regularly presents privately funded performance events, weddings, meetings, dinners and has a full commercial kitchen and a liquor license. Call the hall at 575.336.4800 and see a show or book yourself a party! See you at the Spencer!
