The Cinépolis VIP Theater:
Full Service at the Movies?
By Jeff Becker Photography by Joseph Burgess
Published Fall 2006

Mexico has a long history in film. With the golden age of the Mexican cinema and Pedro Infante packing theaters in the 40's and 50's, the movie-going tradition has been around fro a long time. Now, with state of the art theaters in cities and towns throughout Mexico, the tradition is as alive as ever.

In my travels through Mexico one of my favorite things to do was go to the movies. Even for films I would never see in this country - like the Dennis Rodman story - there was something about Mexico that drew me to the darkened theaters. Every Wednesday throughout the country is two-for-one (dos por uno) and the theaters would be a collection of young and old, together to watch subtitled American blockbusters. The cinemas are simply excellent. Always clean and comfortable, the theaters are designed to perfection, making the movie-going experience that much better.

To taste this yourself, and a little extra, the VIP theater in Juarez offers and unusual touch of class. The theaters feature wide leather recliners arranged in a stadium-seating format to provide comfort while ensuring one never has to fight to see the screen. What is special about the VIP theater is that a full bar and several types of cuisine are available for purchase directly from one's seat. Waiters come to patrons' seats, take orders, and deliver food and beverages before the movie starts. The menu includes a sushi bar, and espresso station, a crepe griddle, a deli, and a full snack bar that offers three types of popcorn.

The theater, which only sits children 3 years and older, is an excellent destination for people who enjoy fun and want to add an exotic twist to their movie-going experience. Cinépolis VIP is located in the Las Misiones Mall in southern Juarez an is probably easier to get to by taxi. Shows run from three in the afternoon to then-thirty at night and despite the VIP quality of the theater, prices are reasonable. One ticket to the VIP theaters is eighty-four pesos (about eight dollars). Unfortunately, the VIP theater does not run the classic 2 for 1 Wednesday promotion.
